I would explain refracted light and how the blue light-waves scatter more than red and are, therefore, more visible. I would tell the child that when light hits tiny water diamonds in the sky, the light turns from the yellow of the sun into blue. I would tell her that Hera loves blue, so when she decided to decorate the sky, she asked Zeus for paint made from lapis.
