The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Rumored to be one of the most beautiful wonders of the ancient world, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon consisted of vaulted terraces raised one above another and resting upon cube-shaped pillars. The terraces allegedly brimmed with plants and flowers of every kind, and looked to be suspended in air, thus appearing as though they were 'hanging.'

The Lighthouse of Alexandria
Built on the Mediterranean Sea, this ancient wonder was the first lighthouse in the world and the tallest building in existence at the time of completion (290 BC), with the exception of the Great Pyramid. The lighthouse was said to guide travelers from all over the world and make Alexandria one of the wealthiest cities in the ancient world. There is also reportedly treasure that may still lie buried below the lighthouse's crumbled foundation.

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was built in 353 BC, after the ruler Mausolus died, leaving his queen, Artemisia, who was also his sister, brokenhearted. As a tribute to him, she built the most splendid tomb in the known world, rich with statuary and carvings in relief, with statues depicting gods and goddesses--guarded by stone warriors mounted on horseback--around the tomb.

The Great Pyramid of Giza
The only surviving wonder of the ancient world, the Great Pyramid of Giza was built around 2500 BC. In their prime, the pyramids were covered in white limestone, which would have shone brilliantly and been visible from every direction for miles around the site. The Great Pyramid was built for the purpose of creating a grand tomb for King Tut--who, as mediator between the gods and the people, was thought to be deserving of the finest of tombs--and was filled with many treasures as well as mysteries!
