Acting school
You need acting lessons to build your confidence, help you find your path, and get you prepared to face auditions. You could go to a true acting school or you could take acting classes in school if you're still in school or at your local college. Or you could get a degree in theater or film.

Community theater
You don't need acting lessons right now, but you do need to jump right in and get your feet wet. You need to see what it's all about. Even in a rural area you should be able to find a local theater, or even several. Find out when auditions are and start memorizing a monologue to perform at the audition. If you want to check things out before auditioning, you could volunteer to work on a production first.

Talent agency
Go straight for the big guns. You're ready to see if you have what it takes. Look up local talent agencies near you. If you don't see one listed, try a modeling agency. Call them and ask if they take actors or voice work. Be sure to read reviews for the talent agency before booking an appointment. Many are just trying to get your money or are scams. Read up on how to avoid talent, acting, and modeling scams before you choose an agency.

Auditions
But not just any auditions. You have to be careful. Do not look up general auditions or casting calls. For one, you could find yourself in a dangerous situation. Two, you just waste time on a scam. To truly audition, do a search for your local theatres. Then look at the casting calls or auditions on their websites. For film or television, visit or call your local or state film commission to find out about open auditions or to get information.

Cattle call
Get in touch with a casting agency that specializes in casting extras. Be at every cattle call they advertise. Get your experience by playing extras and get a good feel for the industry. If you look back at older movies, you'll often see some HUGE stars as extras. But just don't mill around if you're an extra - really get into your character. But don't forget to take direction! You don't want to get kicked off set for upstaging the star!
