1852, in New York City--it was introduced as a marketing scheme by Macy's. 1950, in Los Angeles--it was a term used to describe the unproductive Friday after feasting all day on Thursday. 1961, in Philadelphia--it was used to describe the day after Thanksgiving, due to all of the extra vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the shopping districts.
