Augustus
Considered the first emperor, Augustus controlled the Roman Empire from 27 BC to AD 41, when he died. He was wealthy by family, and Julius Caesar was his great-uncle. He helped to defeat Caesar's assassins. He was also part of the Second Triumvirate, a leadership consisting of military dictators. He restored the facade of Free Republic but retained his autocratic power as a dictator anyway.

Nero
Ruler of the Roman Empire from 54 AD to 68 AD, Nero was adopted by his great-uncle Claudius to become his heir. He focused on diplomacy and trade, looking to make culture in the empire rich and lively. He built theaters, promoted athletic games, etc. However, his people didn't like him. He was often described as corrupt. The fact that he basically started the First Jewish-Roman War didn't help matters any either. Oops.

Marcus Aurelius
Emperor from 161 to 180, Marcus ruled with Lucius Verus. Marcus is known for being the last of the 'Five Good Emperors.' He provided us with 'Meditations,' his untitled writings, which is actually the most important piece of ancient Stoic philosophy that we have. He defeated other empires, succeeding in war. Maybe he knew what he was doing, since he often wrote about following nature as a guide.

Tiberius
The son of Tiberius Claudius Nero and Livia Drusilla, Tiberius ruled from 14 AD to 37 AD. His mother divorced his father and later married Augustus. He actually had quite the blended family, which would lead to 30 years of a dynasty. He was one of the best generals Rome ever saw and conquered many lands. He started a northern frontier, but despite all of this, he was rather dark, reclusive, and somber. Truth be told, he never wanted to become an emperor!
