It magically appeared on a page in the Book of Kells while the monk scribe was sleeping. It is a pagan representation of two crossed rowan branches that was later adapted to Christianity. It represents the halo of Christ as he appeared in a vision at Lindisfarne. When St. Patrick was driving the snakes out, one slithered up the cross and froze in a circle around it.
