'The Enchanted Quill'
A man fell asleep riding his horse for three years until a crow pecked him and woke him up. In thanks, the man vowed to give the crow one of his three daughters in marriage. He took them to his gloomy castle, but only the youngest and nicest followed his instructions. As part of the preparation, she had to go to town and accept any work she could get. Everyone made fun of her for being terrible at everything, but the crow gave her a feather and told her that anything she wrote down with the quill would come true. With it, she was able to cook well and save herself from suitors. When the time was up, the crow became a prince, and they lived happily ever after!

'The Weasel'
A girl was walking along one day when she saw some boys torturing a soft, white weasel. She picked up the weasel, chased off the boys, and cuddled the poor creature. She gave it an egg for food. The eggshell left behind turned to silver! She began feeding the weasel eggs every day, and she soon grew rich. On Easter Sunday, she had a priest bless an egg, and she fed it to the weasel. Instead of turning to silver, the eggshell shot flames, and she fainted in shock. When she came to, she was in a beautiful castle, in the arms of a handsome prince who had been the weasel.

'Prince Dung Beetle'
A girl was on her way to get medicine for her mother when she fell down in an attempt to avoid stepping on a beetle. She was injured and cried because she wouldn't be able to get the medicine quickly. The beetle told her he would fly her to the druggist so she could get the medicine. When she told her mother the story, her mother said, 'Oh, that must be the Blue Prince.' There was a knock at the door, and it was indeed the Blue Prince, who said he had been cursed many years ago for stepping on bugs and she had lifted the curse with her kindness. They married; the mother became well; and fleas played instruments at the wedding.

'The Three Spindles'
A pregnant lass whose parents had thrown her out for being a harlot was sitting on a log when a wood sprite being chased by winter demons ran toward her. She hid the sprite. In thanks, the sprite and her two sisters took her to live in their mossy home. When the baby was born, the wood sprites fell in love with it. The girl gave the child to them, and in return, they gave her three magic spindles that would grant her every wish. She returned home to forgiving parents and married a wealthy farmer. Every Saturday for the rest of her life, she baked a cake and left it on a stump in the woods for the wood sprites as a gesture of thanks.

'The Little Flax Flower'
There were two girls who worked in a flax field--one pretty and one plain. The plain one worked hard and always threw a few extra seeds to the Lady of the Woods. She even built the fairy a little house. The pretty one sang conceited songs, didn't do any of her work very well, and was distracted by trying to find a husband. She was also nasty to the plain one. One day, a prince rode up in a golden carriage. He asked the pretty one if she did fine weaving. A voice from the woods shouted, 'No!' Then he asked the plain one, and the voice from the woods answered, 'Yes!' So he asked the plain one to marry him. In that instant, she turned from plain to pretty, and the opposite happened to the other girl. The prince and the little flax flower drove away to happiness.

'The Howling of the Wind'
An orphaned young man was walking about the country, looking for work. He came upon a well where the most beautiful woman was drawing water. She asked him what his quest was. Upon his answer, she offered him work. He fell in love with her and asked her to marry him. She told him yes as long as for 14 years he never asked about her on a Thursday. They had seven sons. Before the fourteenth year was over, the husband became curious. On a Thursday, she went into a locked room, as was her custom on that day. He peered through the keyhole and saw her bathing, but she had a tail! When she approached him later that evening, he withdrew in disgust. She began crying that because he hadn't waited out the curse, she was doomed to be a dragon forever. She started flying around the outside of the house, wailing. All of the sons stood at the windows, crying until they were drawn to her. Their voices are the howling of the wind.
