Lancaster City
If you want to be close to the beauty and simplicity of Amish country but just can't leave the modern world behind, Lancaster City is the place for you. With only 60,000 people you can't really call it a city. And for a city slicker like you, it IS a small town. You won't be without the Amish experience, either. Lancaster is still a hub, with Amish farms in the near countryside and Amish goods and businesses in town!
New Holland
Known as 'The Garden Spot' of Lancaster County, New Holland is full of fragrant wonder on Spring and Summer nights. You can enjoy it on an evening out at the outdoor theater, or during the day as you browse the farmer's market. On rainy days when you wish you could shop for locally sourced meats and produce, there is a near grocery store sized market called the Shady Maple that also houses a foodie-approved smorgasbord and gift shop. For that matter, there are so many markets, bakeries, and more in the New Holland area that you'd never have to hassle with a real grocery store ever again!
Volant
Far away from the more well known Lancaster county is the Western PA Amish community, of which the tiny village of Volant is a part. At the center of the village is Volant Mills, an old grist mill on a wide rocky creek that has been repurposed as a shop that sells Amish goods. There are a few bakeries and cafes and at the very edge of the village, the farms and Amish community start. It's a tiny village but one that is near other vibrant communities and it's only an hour from Pittsburgh and just a half hour from Youngstown. Plus, it's in a beautiful location in the foothills of the Allegheny mountains!
Big Valley
It's not a specific town, or even a specific county, but it is a very special place in a completely unique world. The technical name of this Appalachian mountain valley is Kishacoquillas, but locals stick with Kish or Big Valley. It's a world of its own. Every Wednesday morning, people from all over the state and even further come for the barn sale and auction where you can buy anything from whoopie pies to live goats. The best deals are on the magnificent fruits and vegetables produced by the Amish. The valley itself is serene farmland but there are plenty of English living there too so you won't feel too isolated. Only isolated in a good way!
