What Should I Study at University?

The liberal arts area of study is perfect for the theoretical mind. Liberal Arts refers to majors in subjects that humanity has held dear for millennia: literature, history, philosophy, psychology, astronomy, and others. Basically, what those in classical antiquity considered to be essential knowledge. Explore English, Communications, Creative Writing, History, Anthropology, and more.

Develop your talents with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. This degree, as opposed to a Bachelor of Arts, puts a more intense focus on your field of study. For example, you can get a BA in Music, but you would take more general studies classes. With the BFA, you would focus much more on the music with just a few general studies courses. The BA is best for those that want a fallback. That's not you. Your art is your passion. Follow it!

Your inquisitive mind is itching for problems to solve. The sciences are a perfect match for you. Some areas of study in the sciences besides the obvious like Biochemistry or Geology are things like Criminal Justice, Kinesiology, Computer Engineering, etc. You could also take a scientific approach to humanities with a Bachelor of Science degree that allows you more focused coursework in a humanity like Psychology or Anthropology than a BA program would.

There are some intriguing avenues of study in math and in engineering. Math can be a gateway to fascinating careers in actuarial, forensic accounting, statistics, meteorology, engineering, academia, and more. Link either of these with the sciences as a double major and the sky is no longer the limit!

By studying business you can learn how to help people grow, either through matching them with a product or service that's beneficial or, on a larger scale, forecasting what society needs. Whatever else you're interested in - say something like healthcare - it has a business side that you would be a perfect fit in. Business covers marketing, management, economics, supply chains, research, and more.

Don't assume that this course of action means no action at all. To the contrary, a general studies degree gives you an opportunity to be more specific in your focus of study. You do not follow the status quo and neither does this option. Universities that offer general studies degrees allow those students to custom build their course plan. For instance, if you wanted to be an expert in Victorian Literature, rather than getting an English or History degree, you could do General Studies and build coursework from classes on late 19th century British poetry and Society During the Victorian Age and even a fashion course on Apparel of the 1870s. Alternately, a general studies degree also works for students that want to have a very diverse education for what may be a diverse marketplace when they graduate.
