Mountain Bike
This is ideal for people who want to bike on off-road trails. People who aren't phased by steep inclines and paths. In other words, it's the type of bike for an adventurer who loves to work out in a very outdoorsy kind of way. You won't catch most gym rats with a mountain bike.
Road Bike
You really are a person of simple bike needs, which means you really just need the most standard of bikes: the road bike. This is what most people are referring to when they say 'bicycle.' You can ride this around anywhere, within reason. But you don't need to worry about the more technical limitations, because you're not about to ride this thing up a mountain or anything.
Triathlon Bike
Build for longevity, this is the bike you purchase when you're working on being as aerodynamic as possible. This is ideal for someone who is time trial racing, meaning they're typically not allowed in mass-start races. Otherwise it would be unfair!
City Bike
This is a pretty standard bike, only it's a hybrid and cruiser hybrid, which means you get to ride it upright, like normal, but your wheels are bigger, rather than narrow like on a road bike. It means you're as comfortable as possible, all the time. Ideal for city dwellers, these are the bikes you can rent from those bike stands on every other street corner these days.
BMX Bike
You're doing tricks, basically deadly tricks, and it's time to invest in a proper bike to do it before something terrible happens. Because we hate to alert you to the fact, but something terrible is bound to happen anyway, at some point. It's an extreme sport for a reason!
